Grass Is Always GreenerProcreate
24in x 36in September 2020 Exhibition Text: This piece conveys the experience and feelings that come with growing up with anti-LGBT morals. It is inspired by Odilon Redon's Apollo's Chariot and Butterflies. Materials used to make this piece were not self-made. I applied Redon's use of abstraction and color scheme to convey feeling and experiences. |

Inspiration
My art piece is inspired by Odilon Redon. I was intrigued by the pieces, Apollos Chariot and Butterflies. Redon is primarily inspired by abstraction and Japanese art. He is an artist which falls under the symbolism movement. He uses abstraction to express his feelings and experiences, which applies to his colored and non-colored pieces. This inspired me because I felt as though the subjects in the piece didn't feel coherent to the pieces personally, it still was visually appealing. The contrast in colors are almost complimentary so it creates divide in hue, the top being a slightly tinted blue and the bottom being a heavily saturated orange red. This piece was really captivating to me because of the way he depicted a story in Greek mythology.

Planning Sketches
In this sketch, I explain how I utilized Redon's color schemes and brush techniques and where I applied them. I used this sketch to brainstorm my ideas even if it wasn't going to be a coherent piece. Eventually I combined both of the artwork's aesthetics in their abstraction to correlate with certain emotions. The saturated reds in the work give off a sense of danger. The muted colors in the bottom would express comfort and escapism.

In the beginning, this was going to be a study of The Apollo's Chariot but after the main planning sketch I decided to utilize it as a segment of my piece by lowering the opacity and conveying it as a reflection in the glass window as to communicate what I'm seeing outside in my perspective. I feel it does a good job of balancing the saturation of the piece between the Butterflies inspired scenery at the bottom as which also contributes to the overall movement of the piece.

This study of Butterflies I drew was for me to play around with the colors and practice how I should be using them in the piece. For the most part, I'm going to use the color scheme entirely as well as the Apollo's Chariot color palette to create a juxtaposition which ties into the story that I'm trying to tell with how I keep comfort close to me through the idea of others' bright futures and the reality of the how

Experimentation
I experimented with the liquify tool in procreate to try to achieve the fish-eye lens effect but it didn't end up working. I decided to just do what I did in the original planning sketch which was just curving the lines slightly to be parallel to the perspective guide lines which align with the vanishing point. This was my first time doing something like this so it was pretty challenging but fun.
I also changed a few things like how much the windows curved with the perspective and the position of my arms while I'm sitting. Afterwards I was trying to see how it would look if the glow of the painting didn't go underneath the line art. When I was in the process of shading the skin, I decided the abstract lighting give this piece more of an impact regarding the overall unity of the piece and its values so I kept what I had originally. |
